Bringing the magic of reading to children! Help a child to read – volunteer locally today.
Doorstep Library is a not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to bringing the gift of books and the joy of reading into the homes of children and families who need our support. Our Home and Online Reading Volunteers go into homes in disadvantaged areas across London, to inspire a love of books, of stories and storytelling, and to install a lifelong passion for reading.
We urgently need people with a passion for reading to join our volunteer team and support the number of families in Hammersmith & Fulham we have on our books waiting to be paired with a Reading Volunteer.
Here at Doorstep Library, we believe in the power of words to take you places. We are a community-focused charity dedicated to bringing the gift of books and the joy of reading into the homes of children and families who need our support. Our Reading Volunteers go into homes in under-resourced areas of Hammersmith & Fulham (as well as Westminster, Lambeth and Camden) to inspire a love of books, of stories and storytelling, and to instil a lifelong passion for reading.
Other literacy charities get books into homes; Doorstep Library’s unique home-based services means we are there in person, finding the most appropriate books for every child we visit and building a relationship with the whole family. Our tailored service enables us to help prepare children for school and broaden their opportunities in later life.
Through our long-term approach, our volunteers build trusting relationships with families, helping to connect them with the community and signposting to additional sources of local support. Whether in person, or online, we are there to support children and families who need us most.
Our Home Reading Volunteer role involves volunteering between 4:30pm and 7pm on a set day each week, during term time only. We also run reading sessions online. If you are unable to commit to travelling to one of our projects in person but would still like to volunteer, then you can become an Online Reading Volunteer. (Please note that all of our projects adhere to Government guidelines and we review these on a regular basis. As such our Home Reading sessions will be taking place on the doorstep or books will be swapped with the family also on the doorstep.)
If you would like to support your local community and are interested in finding out more about our volunteer roles, please book onto one of our regular Information Sessions here.
